Poem For the Readee

The Gift of Children's Books

This began once upon a time with picture books
not too many words
and she asked me to read again
the same tale countless times
knowing when I was making up words
inserting new characters
creating new plots

Bedtime stories read so long ago
paved a path of imagination
a picturing in her head
unlocking that part of the brain
that sees the unseen
paints pictures and remarkably
soothes and calms
and reassures

Later, I would read her those stories
that I wanted to read and she enjoyed them as well

Lately she makes good reading suggestions.
